What Happens After the Wedding? Behind the Scenes of Wedding Guest Illustrations

One of the questions I am asked most often by couples is:

"What happens if there isn't enough time to paint all of our guests during the wedding?"

The answer is simple: my work continues long after the celebration has ended.

As a live wedding illustrator, my goal is always to create as many watercolor guest portraits as possible during the wedding itself. Guests love watching the illustrations come to life, and the paintings become a unique keepsake they can take home from the celebration.

However, there is often not enough time to paint every guest on-site. Rather than limiting the number of portraits, I photograph guests throughout the day using my iPhone or iPad and complete the remaining illustrations later in my studio.

Anna & Michael's Elegant Wedding at The Dolder Grand Zurich

A beautiful example of this was the wedding of Anna and Marc at the iconic Dolder Grand in Zurich.

Surrounded by breathtaking views, timeless architecture, and elegant details, their wedding was the perfect setting for live watercolor guest illustrations.

Throughout the celebration, I painted guests live while also photographing additional couples, families, and friends. After the wedding, I returned to my studio to carefully complete the remaining illustrations, ensuring that every guest received their own hand-painted watercolor portrait.

Each illustration was individually sketched and painted by hand using professional watercolor techniques on premium fine art paper.

A Special Watercolor Portrait of the Newlyweds

In addition to the guest illustrations, Anna and Michael requested something even more personal.

Using photographs from their wedding day, I created a larger watercolor artwork capturing the beautiful moment immediately after their ceremony when they shared their first kiss as newlyweds.

The portrait was first softly drawn in pencil before being carefully painted with watercolor on Hahnemühle Fine Art paper. The finished artwork was then professionally framed in an elegant white frame with a museum-style passe-partout, creating a timeless piece that will remind them of their wedding day for years to come.

Including Beloved Family Members

Many couples consider their pets to be part of the family, and Anna was no exception.

As an additional surprise, I painted a custom A5 watercolor portrait of Enzo, their beloved Australian Shepherd. Personal commissions like these are a wonderful way to include special family members in the wedding artwork collection, even when they were unable to attend the celebration.

Carefully Packaged and Delivered

Once all illustrations are completed, every artwork is carefully inspected, protected, and beautifully packaged.

For Anna and Michael's collection, all guest illustrations, framed artwork, and Enzo's portrait were elegantly arranged and shipped in a black presentation box, creating a truly special unboxing experience.
